Manta rays of the Maldives - Marine Biology presentation by Anne Marie Kitchen Wheeler
The presentation was given by the UK research scientist Anne Marie Kitchen Wheeler and was largely a slide show on manta rays interspersed with video clips and explanatory commentaries. The presentation touched upon the anatomy, habitat, place in the ecosystem and behavioral aspects of mantas as well as some of the ways in which mantas are threatened and how they can be protected.

Stargazing session at Thaajudhdheen School
The Maldives Science Society has held a stargazing event for the students of Thaajudhdheen School’s science club. The event was held at Thaajudhdheen premises at 7 pm on 28 February 2010 and was attended by some 150 students. The event was held as a response to an eager request from Thaajudhdheen School and was organized jointly by the Maldives Science Society and Thaajudhdheen School.

STARGAZE with astronomers without borders
The Maldives Science Society in collaboration with Lale Youth International School is organizing an astronomical event with the title STARGAZE, with Astronomers without borders. The event is planned to be held on 18 February 2010 in the paved area to the North of the Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminal. A major highlight of the event will be the donation of Galileo-scopes [telescopes] to 11 schools.

The coral reefs of the Maldives _ a presentation hosted by the MSS
The presentation, whose theme was ‘the coral reefs of the Maldives’, was given by Verena Wiesbauer who holds Master of Science degrees in both Marine Biology and Zoology. A graduate of the famed University of Vienna, she is also a specialist on coral propagation and artificial reefs.

Hubble presentation
The event which was a presentation on the universe as viewed through the Hubble Space Telescope by the ex-NASA researcher and astronomer Dr Kavan Ratnatunga, was well-attended by students and science enthusiasts from across the city. The stunning display of ultra-sharp and breathtaking images taken from the Hubble alongside an ultra-clear expository running commentary by Dr Kavan made the whole event all the more spectacular and indeed was well-received by the audience.
