STARGAZE, with Astronomers without borders

STARGAZE, with astronomers without bordersThe Maldives Science Society in collaboration with Lale Youth International School is organizing an astronomical event with the title STARGAZE, with Astronomers without borders. The event is planned to be held on 18 February 2010 in the paved area to the North of the Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminal. A major highlight of the event will be the donation of Galileo-scopes [telescopes] to 11 schools.

The main objective of  STARGAZE, with Astronomers without borders is to create interest towards Astronomy amongst the youth and school children and to demonstrate how to use telescopes to view stars and other objects in space.

During the event, an astronomical researcher from the UK Thomas Goodey will make presentations to those present and students and visitors will also have a chance to view the stars and other objects with a computer controlled telescope.

The Maldives Open Source Society’s demonstration of how to use the open-source software ‘Stellarium‘ will also be a key highlight of the event. The event is to continue on the following day [19 February 2010] as well.

On both days the event will start at 7:00pm and end at 11:00pm.

UPDATE:

“STARGAZE with astronomers without borders” location has been changed to Lale international school due to unexpected bad weather.

Programs will continue as we planned except the stargazing with the telescope. If the weather is good enough at the time of event we will try to arrange viewing at least some celestial objects in the sky.

Date: 18th Feb 2010
Time: 1900hrs to 2100hrs. (changed)

  1. Is Male’ a good observing sight? i believe there is too much light pollution there and atmospheric haze..
apart from that, what you guys are doing is just amazing. I personally am very grateful as a human being for your efforts to educate the public, especially kids and create interest in the cosmos. Keep up the good work!

  2. Shiham: Thank you.
Male’ is not a good location for observing as its light polluted. We have chosen Hulhumale’ as its less light polluted and people can reach the area cheaper.
