The coral reefs of the Maldives – A presentation hosted by the MSS

The presentation, whose theme is ‘the coral reefs of the Maldives’, is given by Verena Wiesbauer who holds Master of Science degrees in both Marine Biology and Zoology. A graduate of the famed University of Vienna, she is also a specialist on coral propagation and artificial reefs.

The MSS lauds Dr. Kavan Ratnatunge

The Maldives Science Society [MSS] extends thanks and gratitude to ex-NASA scientist Dr. Kavan Ratnatunge for his contribution for the successful launching of this society’s first ever event.

The Maldives Science Society joins the StarPeace Project

The StarPeace Project is a Global Special Project for the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009). The project aims at connecting people living in bordering countries by conducting joint star parties to show that the sky could act as a bridge to unite people in spite of their culture, religion, nationality etc. As part of this project the Maldives Science Society is collaborating with the Sri Lankan Astronomical Association [AALK] for a joint event tentatively scheduled to be held on Friday, 13th March 2009.

The Maldives Science Society acknowledged as the national node for the IYA2009

The Maldives Science Society proudly announces that this society has been acknowledged by the International Astronomy Union [IAU] as the national node [the single point of contact] for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 [IYA2009]. Mr. Ahid Rasheed, one of the four founders of this society, has been chosen to act as chairman in the society’s capacity as the national node.

Maldives Science Society’s maiden events – a success!

The Maldives Science Society has successfully hosted as planned its first ever science-event since its inception early this month. The event which was a presentation on the universe as viewed through the Hubble Space Telescope by the ex-NASA researcher and astronomer Dr Kavan Ratnatunga, was well-attended by students and science enthusiasts from across the city.

Cosmos is a TV documentary created by Carl Sagan on science. The documentary is about the origins, method and evolution of science and also its relevance and bearing on the future development of our species.
